Vblog Entry 1: Introduction

 Welcome CUIN 4361 Class!

First, I would like to say hello and welcome you to my blog. My name is Davereon Freeney. I'm currently a senior at the University of Houston, and my major is in Education. I will be graduating with the certification to teach EC-6. I will be graduating this coming May, and I am so excited! I cannot wait to see what the future has in store for me as I begin my journey as a teacher!

Growing up, I wasn't exposed to a lot of diversity (at first), so English was the only language I heard because everyone around me spoke English. It wasn’t until I moved cities in the 6th grade and transferred to a School with diversity. I began to hear people speak Spanish around me so this was a new experience. I took Spanish in middle school and my last two years in high school. All the classes were structured the same way; I just learned a little bit more each year. The teacher would start by having a lesson over some words or a topic for that day. We would start by learning the basic things like numbers, months of the year, vocabulary, and simple phrases in each class. We would get a worksheet and complete it, and that would be it. As I got older and began working at places with people who spoke different languages; I have gain more experience with learning and speaking Spanish by talking to my co-workers and learning from them.

As a future educator, my teaching philosophy will center around ensuring that; I am building positive relationships will each of my students and creating a safe and comfortable learning environment for every student. I am passionate about diversity and equity, so my classroom will reflect that. I can do this by getting to know my students and their background so I can know what their individual needs are so they can be successful (Wright, 2019, p. 25). I know I will have a variety of students, and every student learns differently, so I will have to use various strategies that will benefit every child. Wright stated, “ELLs formulate, reformulate, and negotiate their identities as they deal with and attempt to resolve the conflicts between what they encounter at home, in school, and in the dominant social culture"(2019, p.21). Keeping that in mind as a teacher, I will celebrate my ELLs students' differences and culture and use it as a teaching moment for my students to learn more about diversity and create that comfortable learning space for us all. I will make sure they receive the appropriate accommodations and extra support they may need. They should feel comfortable and should be able to embrace their native language and culture even inside of school.

  1. Hi Davereon!

I enjoyed reading your post! I absolutely love your teaching philosophy. I think it is important to create those strong and positive bonds with your students to be able to get to know them really well. This will allow you to create individualized goals and support for each of your students. Meeting the needs of every individual student will help them be successful in the classroom. I also love how you want to create a positive connotation around your students’ differences. I believe all our students should be celebrated for their unique cultures and differences. If we show our students that we love each and everyone one of them, our students will follow in our footsteps to create a beautiful classroom community.

    1. Hi Hannah!
Thank you for commenting on my blog I've enjoyed reading your comment. Creating those bonds is crucial, and as you said, it allows me to format instructional goals and offer support for each student because I will know what they need. As wright stated, "How educators choose to view their ELLs affects how they organize teaching and learning in their classes.." (2019, p.3) This is why I plan to create that positive connotation around my student's differences to welcome all. I agree with you all students should be celebrated for their differences and backgrounds, and as a teacher, I will show love for every one of my students.

  2. Hi Davereon!

I first wanted to say you did an amazing job in sharing your experience and what you believe in as a future teacher. Your desire of creating an environment where all students feel welcome was very visible after reading. Also, I'm touched that you are very open to the idea of obtaining multiple teaching styles to meet all the student's needs, especially ELL students. As Wright stated, "How educators choose to view their ELLs affects how they organize teaching and learning in their classes.." (2019, p.3). To support your ELL students learning, you first need to learn who they are as a person. In the process, you will learn how they learn best. From there, you can provide them with the best teaching techniques to ensure their success in learning.

  3. Hello Ivonne!
Thank you for commenting on my blog. I agree with you to best support my ELL students, I must first learn about them and their learning styles. That goes for all students; my main goal is to ensure that I have created that environment for all students to feel welcomed. As wright stated, "How educators choose to view their ELLs affects how they organize teaching and learning in their classes.." (2019, p.3) made me think about all I can do to support my students. Which is how I got the idea of using multiple teaching styles inside my classroom to reach all students. In the end, this will ensure success in their learning because I will be getting through to them in the way that is most beneficial to them.
